Photovoltaic
power generation is emerging and becoming an important pillar to meet the
global renewable energy supply. Reliable lightning current/surge protective
device is necessary to prevent failures and improve the service life of
inverters, so as to maintain the power generation of photovoltaic power
generation system.
As photovoltaic modules are installed
in a large area and arranged densely outdoors, photovoltaic power plants have
the high risk of direct lightning and over-voltage shocks. SPDs must be
installed at key points of photovoltaic system to avoid high-cost equipment
damage and downtime problems.
Selection and
configuration of SPD is based on the concept of lightning protection zones in
IEC62305. The standard defines the installation of different coordinated
protection devices in various protection zones. The best lightning protection
system requires a combination of external lightning protection (including
air-termination system, down-conductor system, earth-termination system) and
internal lightning protection (including spatial shielding equipotential
bonding, SPDs, etc.).
